Masters, Avatars and Disciples:
An Index of Spiritual Teachers

Back to Homepage

Summary: A compilation of information on several noted Masters, Avatars and well-known spiritual teachers throughout history. Sources include Benjamin Creme and Share International Foundation, and the Alice A. Bailey teachings.

The information below has been compiled mainly from Benjamin Creme's books and his articles in Share International magazine, with additional material from the Alice Bailey teachings. Please note that no significance should be attached to the inclusion or exclusion of any particular individual mentioned in this index. Most of the information in Mr Creme's books is compiled from answers to readers' questions published in the magazine Share International. That a particular person is mentioned is simply because someone has asked a question about them. Likewise the information about each person varies according to the questions that have been asked.

Being included in this index is not an endorsement of the quality of those teachings nor is it a confirmation (unless specifically noted) that the individual was in contact with the Masters. In searching for reliable sources of knowledge the discrimination of the spiritual seeker is always important. As the Master D.K. told Alice Bailey "On the inner planes are teachers of all descriptions, some of profound knowledge, others not so much more advanced than those of you who are taught." In addition, there are on the astral planes (the planes of illusion) powerful thoughtforms of the known Masters, the astral constructions of devoted aspirants and disciples over the years. Many astrally sensitive people contact these illusory 'Masters' and receive back the 'teachings', astrally embodied, which at least to some extent have come originally from real Masters through mentally polarised and soul-focused disciples. There are many such instances today, some of them very well known and respected.

The numbers in brackets such as (2.4) refers to the exact point of evolution that was attained during that life. The final stages of the evolutionary journey is marked off by five major expansions of consciousness known as initiations -- (2.4) would indicate that the individual was nearly halfway between the second and third initiations. As a comparison the degree of evolution of the average human being on this planet is currently around 0.3. Subsequently, there are about 850,000 first degree initiates, almost 240,000 second degree initiates, approximately 2,300-2,400 third degree initiates ad around 450 fourth degree initiates, and 15 Masters. It takes hundreds of thousands of incarnations to arrive at the first initiation and, once achieved, can take from 2 to 15 or 18 incarnations to achieve the second initiation - the average being around 6 or 7 lives. After the second initation, the evolution speeds up tremendously under the conscious direction and stimulation of the Soul and the disciple may be able to achive the third initiation in that same life or the next. The fourth usually follows again in that same life or the next, and then the fifth initation in the next life depending upon the destiny of the Spiritual Man or Woman.

Benjamin Creme has indicated that a Master is someone who has taken at least five initiations and therefore completed the human stage of evolution. At this stage some of the Masters remain serving on this planet, or go to higher planets. There are 63 Masters connected with the human evolution, but many more working with the sub-human kingdoms (animal, vegetable and mineral) and with the vast number of angelic or Deva evolutions. Many go to the higher planetary system of Sirius -- our Hierarchy of Masters is a branch of the Great White Brotherhood on Sirius.

Artists:
The following information is taken from the article by Benjamin Creme "Artists and their Rays", which appears in Maitreya's Mission Volume 3. All the artists mentioned in the article were inspired by Masters and have since themselves become Masters: Cimabue (2.35) (1240-1302), Giotto (2.4) (1267-1337), Rembrandt (3.0) (1606-1669), Leonardo da Vinci (4.4) (1452-1519), Raphael (3.0) (1483-1520), Michelangelo (3.3) (1475-1564), Paolo Veronese (3.0) (1528-1588), El Greco (3.0) (1541-1614), Albrecht Durer (2.4) (1471-1528), Velasquez (2.4) (1599-1660).

Cimabue is now a sixth-degree Master working on one of the higher planes of this earth. Giotto is now a sixth-degree initiate. Michelangelo is now on Sirius but has taken the equivalent of seven initiations. Paolo Veronese is now a Master on the 7th Ray and will be very active in the world in the New Age. He will be the inspiration behind the first 70 or 80 years of New Age architecture and so will powerfully affect the architecture of the next 150 years. El Greco is now a sixth-degree Master and working on one of the higher planes of this earth. Durer is on the sacred planet, Vulcan. Velasquez is now a Master on the 4th Ray, working on one of the higher planes of this earth. He is working with the devas – 4th Ray Masters seem often to do that. His aim is to get to Mercury. See below for comments about Leonardo da Vinci.

Another not mentioned in the article is the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens (3.0) (1577-1640). He is now a Master on the 4th Ray and works exclusively with the deva evolution. Lorenzo Lotto (2.5) (1480-1556), the Venetian painter is also now a Master of the fifth degree. He is not at present in incarnation but is planning to be so around the turn of the century.

Works to help the Master Morya in His manifold endeavours along the 1st Ray line. This includes the stimulus of the various esoteric and occult societies, in an attempt to being their thinking along more correct lines. More recently has taken birth in a male body in Russia and will take the fifth initiation in this life. She was Count Cagliostro (3.2) in a previous incarnation.

"The Boy"(4.0) (early 20th Century) The subject of the book The Boy and the Brothers by Swami Omananda. He was a slum child from the East End of London, and suffered a great deal. He was simply a hollow personality, which was taken over by the Masters and used as a medium to teach through. The Masters very, very rarely use trance mediumship and this is the only example that we know of. Their normal method of communication is telepathy, which is the higher clairvoyance, through the medium of the soul. The telepathic method was how they gave the teachings through HP Blavatsky, Helena Roerich, Alice A. Bailey and now Benjamin Creme. (Note: The Boy is a different person from the subject of The Boy Who Saw True – see Cyril Scott )

The Catholic church was convinced of his sanctity by miracles which happened in his name after his death and as a result he was officially beatified. Benjamin Creme's Master has also confirmed miracles connected with Charbel which took place in Sweden in 1992, and also revealed that Charbel is one of the Masters currently living in the Middle East.

Eastern teachers: The various Eastern gurus who come to the West, such as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and Swami Prabhupada (of the Hare Krishnas) are all disciples of a certain Master. They are sent to the West to introduce one or other form of meditation or spritual practice.

There are also Avatars that appear in India, such as Ramakrishna, Vivekananda and Sai Baba. They are not actually members of this planet's Spiritual Hierarchy but 'come in' from outside the planet. The group of Masters involved with the Western world (such as DK, Morya, and Koot Humi) are members of the Trans Himalayan Lodge. Unlike the members of the separate, South Indian Lodge, these Masters do not work openly as yet, but are in the process of emergence into the everyday world following the Day of Declaration.

In the Essene scriptures Jesus is referred to as the "pierced Messiah", and Maitreya as the "Teacher of Righteousness". The Dead Sea Scrolls are a more accurate account of the events surrounding the life of Jesus than are the biblical texts. In the 6th to 7th centuries He visited and taught the Native Americans and Polynesians of the Pacific. He has special work to do with the Christian Churches and will eventually take over the Throne of St. Peter in Rome, the city where He has been based since 1989. He travels around the world a great deal and is one of the most important Masters for the West. He has seven Masters working under him in the Americas.
